Vento ed incontri. Day 17

English version below

Today we went the other way around on the Shimanami-kaido and from there we reached Niihama.
All along the route we had a strong head wind, and you can imagine how strong can the wind blow on a bridge high above the sea, and a strong sun shining on us has given a taste of how summer can be here.
For the night we are staying in a house decorated with several antiquities related to henroes, and the owner has appreaciated our compliments for the house, and after dinner it has been nice to have some small talk with her.
This is probably one of the peculiar aspects of this pilgrimage: those who give their house for hosting henroes, though asking a small fee, do not do it for monetary profit, but to take part to the big exchange of energy and experiences of the walk.
An hotel, no matter how cool and modern, will always result cold and impersonal in comparison.
For this reason yhe next time we will do this walk we will try to learn some japanese, to better interact with the locals.

Tra cielo e mare. Day 16

English version below

Kukai, Kobo Daishi's living name, chose this name after having a mystical experience at cape Muroto, when he saw sky (ku) and sea (kai) merging into each other.
Today we had the same experience deviating from the henro route and cycling on the Shimanami bridges.
Also known as the cyclist sanctuary, these seven briges connect Imabari,  in Ehime prefecture, to Onomichi, in Hiroshima prefecture, along a 80 km route connecting five small islands with a dedicated cycling road.
From the huge amount of cyclists we see and from the scenery we enjoy, we have to admit the name is very well deserved.
And after the effort of the day, we relax in an onsen, getting ready f9r the coming days.

Up in the mountains. Day 15

English version below

Rest day for our bikes today. To climb up to temple 44 and 45 we took public transportation and then walked.
At temple 44 we meet a charter bus of pilgrims: listening to 50 people chanting with single voice the heart sutra in a temple closed among mountains is really touching.
Along with us travels an australian henro, with whom we have some chat during the bus trip.
Climbing to temple 45 is for mountain goats: 800 meters walk to rise up 200 meters.
In a cave entering the rock of the mountain for a tenth of meter, under the feeble light of some candels and among the smoke of incense, the gods' statues listen to the sutras chanted by the pilgrims.
While the sun sets behind the mountain range, at the bus stop we meet a couple of retired canadian henroea and an old local woman, with whom we spend time chatting while we wait the bus that will bring us back in Matsuyama.

Matsuyama. Day 14

English version below

This morning we have started with Seiyo covered in mist exhaling from the ground. After a short climb we have reached down to the sea level, where through routes 24 and 378 we have delighted our eyes with astounding valleys and sea sceneries until our arrival in Matsuyama. Being the 24 not much used by henroes, gaijin like us are pretty rare. That's why any greeting from us was a source of curiosity. While we were taking some pictures,  an old lady stopped by, and once learned we were cycling to Matsuyama she cheerfully encouraged us. How we can understand though not speaking japanese is still a mistery.

Ehime. Day 13

English version below

Today we finally left Kochi prefecture and reached Seiyo, in the Ehime prefecture.

We are not going to tell you about the route, the sun or the ocean, but about what happened this evening.

After taking a shower we went out for dinner looking for a place. Not knowing the city we asked two ladies, busy chatting among them next to their houses. Now, considering we don't speak Japanese and they English, the entire talk was a bit surreal. After a while one of the two tell us "chotto matte kudasai" (wait a moment, please), disappeared few seconds and rrappered back with a small car. She took us on board and drove us to a restaurant close by. After checking we knew the way back she gretted us.

This made our day!

Zen. Day 12

English version below

Today has been a really zen day.
We woke up with the sound of rain, sounding like someonr was pouring the entire Pacific over Ashizura peninsula. A quick check of the weather forecast informed us that rain was expected over the entire Shikoku until at least 10 this evening. Having the choice between resting one day enjoying one again the tasty curry or mounting on our bikes to ride until the next destination, we avoided the painful decision by knowing our lodging had no vacancies for the day.
After buying two waterproof suits from Lawson and having received advices from the owner on where to sleep and how to reach it, we set in motion, practicing, as per his suggestion, meditation under the rain while we cycled on the Ashizura Sunny Road.

We took the road avoided yesterday and in about 4 hours reached Sukumo, where we will now do some tourism.

Capo Ashizura. Day 11

English version below

Today has been a day to remember. It started with clouds coming from the Pacific pouring rain on our route to cape Ashizura.

Because of the rain we opted for a coastal route, longer but with less traffic, excluding the more direct and traffic loaded path climbing into the mist covered mountains.

30 km of winding and hilly road, through dense vegetation with wet ground.

Once reached the town where we would have lodged, the rain became heavy, forcing us to stop. Warmly welcomed we changed our clothes, left our bags and mounted again on our bikes, heading for cape Ashizura, the southern point of our trip.

The road has been even more spectacular: either on 70 m high cliffs or through dense vegetation on the side of the hills, it led us to destination, gifting also with some sun.

Along the way we have also met Min, a fellow henro we knew yesterday and who, like Yasuhiro, who we met at temple 12, seems to walk faster then we cycle.

Back to our lodging, we have had dinner with a delicious curry.

The power of a smile. Day 10

English version below.

Thanks to Truus and Suzanne, the two henroes we met yesterday, today has been much better. Having had dinner together with some chat and laughter on the events happened during our trips has restored our morale and made ua ready for this morning.
Thanks a lot Troos and Suzanne, your presence has been a balm for our spirits.

This morning after about ten scenic kilometers where we enjoyed the sun and the Pacific Ocean in the coast of cape Aoki, we climbed to Nanako-toge pass and from there, through the valley of Niida, we reached temple 37, Iwamotoji, (where we also bought some wonderfully scented oranges) and then the Pacific again, where a shower catched us shortly before
Nakamura. After waiting around three quarters under a shelter together with an orchestra of frogs and a colourful train, we reached our lodging, a nice resort on the beach.

Pausa. Day 9

This morning we started with the best conditions: our minshuku was right in front of temple 33, the sun was shining and the sky was clear like never so far and, being Sunday, there would have been much less traffic on the roads.

Once reached the sea the annoying head wind made us change our minds and we didn't take the scenic, hilly and winding panoramic route on Yokonami peninsula (20 km up and down from sea level to 150 m), and we opted for the inner route.

After the pass, in the city of Susaki, we stopped by a rest hut, pondering what to do: 40 km uphill to 400 meters left and no more mental energy to proceed.

When we were about to start again, two henroes,  maybe sent by Kobo Daishi, showed up: a dutch and a german ladies, with whom we exchanged some chat. Their words made us realize that we were having a breakdown and that it was not worth to push over the limit, and made our day.

Therefore we decided to stop in the same city and spend the evening with them to recharge our batteries. Tomorrow we will see.

Kochi. Day 8

Today we have finally reached Kochi, and we have had the pleasure of cycling through rice fields which suddenly turned into residential areas. The cherry on the pie was the lunch break at a rest hut with annexed shrine and with view on the rice fields: nurturing both body and mind!

The route was completely flat, except for the temples, which were all above 100 meters.
From the last of them, Chikurinji,  one van have a breathtaking view on Tosa bay.
And if I had not chosen the wrong setting on the camera, we would have also nice pictures of the 5 levels pagoda.

Another thing which has struck us is the constant presence of tsunami shelters and indications of escape routes. The monster might be sleeping, but it's not forgotten.
