Vento ed incontri. Day 17

Oggi abbiamo inizialmente percorso a ritroso il Shimanami-kaido e poi da li abbiamo proseguito fino a Niihama.
Per tutto il tragitto il vento ha soffiato contro di noi, e su un ponte alto sul mare vi lascio immaginare quanto può essere forte, ed un sole decisamente caldo ci ha fatto sentire come può essere l'estate da queste parti.
Una casa arredata con antichità collegate agli henro ci ha accolto per la notte, e la proprietaria ha apprezzato i nostri complimenti per la casa, e dopo cena è stato piacevole fermarsi a scambiare qualche parola con lei.
Questo è forse uno degli aspetti peculiari di questo pellegrinaggio: chi mette a disposizione la sua casa per i pellegrini, pur chiedendo un simbolico contributo, non lo fa per profitto, ma per essere parte del grande scambio di energia ed esperienze veicolate da questo cammino.
Un hotel, per quanto chic ed alla moda, sarà sempre freddo ed impersonale a confronto.
Per questa ragione la prossima volta che faremo questo pellegrinaggio ci sforzeremo di imparare un po di giapponese, per meglio comunicare con le persone del posto.

Today we went the other way around on the Shimanami-kaido and from there we reached Niihama.
All along the route we had a strong head wind, and you can imagine how strong can the wind blow on a bridge high above the sea, and a strong sun shining on us has given a taste of how summer can be here.
For the night we are staying in a house decorated with several antiquities related to henroes, and the owner has appreaciated our compliments for the house, and after dinner it has been nice to have some small talk with her.
This is probably one of the peculiar aspects of this pilgrimage: those who give their house for hosting henroes, though asking a small fee, do not do it for monetary profit, but to take part to the big exchange of energy and experiences of the walk.
An hotel, no matter how cool and modern, will always result cold and impersonal in comparison.
For this reason yhe next time we will do this walk we will try to learn some japanese, to better interact with the locals.

Ehime. Day 13

Oggi abbiamo finalmente lasciato la prefettura di Kochi e siamo entrati nella prefettura di Ehime, arrivando a Seiyo.

Ma non vi parlereremo del percorso, del sole o dell'oceano, ma di quanto accaduto stasera.

Dopo aver fatto la doccia, siamo usciti per andare a cena. Non sapendo dove andare, abbiamo chiesto a due signore che stavano parlottando sulla porta di casa loro dove trovare un locale. Ora, noi non parliamo giapponese e loro non parlavano inglese, quindi la cosa era un po surreale. Ad un certo punto una delle due ci fa "chotto matte kudasai" (un attimo, per favore), sparisce per qualche istante e riappare con una macchinina, ci fa salire e ci accompagna ad un ristorante! Quindi si congeda assicurandosi che sappiamo come rientrare.

Questo ha reso la nostra giornata speciale.

Today we finally left Kochi prefecture and reached Seiyo, in the Ehime prefecture.

We are not going to tell you about the route, the sun or the ocean, but about what happened this evening.

After taking a shower we went out for dinner looking for a place. Not knowing the city we asked two ladies, busy chatting among them next to their houses. Now, considering we don't speak Japanese and they English, the entire talk was a bit surreal. After a while one of the two tell us "chotto matte kudasai" (wait a moment, please), disappeared few seconds and rrappered back with a small car. She took us on board and drove us to a restaurant close by. After checking we knew the way back she gretted us.

This made our day!

Capo Ashizura. Day 11

Oggi la giornata è stata memorabile. È cominciata con nuvole cariche di pioggia provenienti dal Pacifico, che hanno scaricato pioggia sul nostro percorso verso capo Ashizura.

Proprio per la pioggia abbiamo optato per un percorso costiero, più lungo ma meno trafficato, rispetto ad uno più diretto e trafficato ma che si inoltrava tra le montagne coperte di nuvole. 30 km di una teoria infinita di sali e scendi tortuosi su una strada stretta e bagnata attraverso una fitta vegetazione.

Giunti finalmente nella città dove avremmo pernottato la pioggia è diventata diluvio, costringendoci a fermarci. Accolti calorosamente dai proprietari, ci siamo asciugati, cambiati e, lasciate le sacche, ci siamo rimessi in bici verso capo Ashizura, punto più meridionale del nostro viaggio.

Qui la strada è stata anche più spettacolare: in parte su scogliere a 70 metri sul mare, in parte attraverso la fitta vegetazione sui fianchi delle colline, ci ha accompagnato a destinazione regalandoci anche dei raggi di sole.

Per strada abbiamo reincontrato diverse volte Min, un henro conosciuto ieri e che, come Yasuhiro, conosciuto a tempio 12, pare andare più veloce lui a piedi che noi in bicicletta.

Ritornati infine per la stessa strada al nostro alloggio, abbiamo cenato con un delizioso curry.

Today has been a day to remember. It started with clouds coming from the Pacific pouring rain on our route to cape Ashizura.

Because of the rain we opted for a coastal route, longer but with less traffic, excluding the more direct and traffic loaded path climbing into the mist covered mountains.

30 km of winding and hilly road, through dense vegetation with wet ground.

Once reached the town where we would have lodged, the rain became heavy, forcing us to stop. Warmly welcomed we changed our clothes, left our bags and mounted again on our bikes, heading for cape Ashizura, the southern point of our trip.

The road has been even more spectacular: either on 70 m high cliffs or through dense vegetation on the side of the hills, it led us to destination, gifting also with some sun.

Along the way we have also met Min, a fellow henro we knew yesterday and who, like Yasuhiro, who we met at temple 12, seems to walk faster then we cycle.

Back to our lodging, we have had dinner with a delicious curry.

The power of a smile. Day 10

Grazie a Truus e Suzanne, le due henro incontrate ieri, la giornata di oggi è stata molto migliore. Aver cenato insieme, parlato, raccontato e riso dei vari eventi occorsi a tutti in questo viaggio ci ha sollevato il morale e ci ha fatto tornare pronti stamattina.
Grazie mille Troos e Suzanne, la vostra compagnia è stata balsamo per i nostri spiriti.

Stamattina dopo una decina di chilometri panoramici in cui abbiamo goduto del sole e dell'oceano Pacifico tra le insenature di capo Aoki, abbiamo scalato il passo di Nanako-toge e da lì, attraverso la valle del Niida, siamo arrivati a tempio 37, Iwamotoji, (dove abbiamo anche comprato delle arance profumatissime) e quindi daccapo sul Pacifico, dove un acquazzone ci ha colto poco prima di Nakamura. Dopo aver atteso tre quarti d'ora sotto una tettoia, in compagnia di una orchestra di rane e di qualche sferragliante treno colorato, abbiamo raggiunto il nostro albergo, un bel resort sulla spiaggia.

Thanks to Truus and Suzanne, the two henroes we met yesterday, today has been much better. Having had dinner together with some chat and laughter on the events happened during our trips has restored our morale and made ua ready for this morning.
Thanks a lot Troos and Suzanne, your presence has been a balm for our spirits.

This morning after about ten scenic kilometers where we enjoyed the sun and the Pacific Ocean in the coast of cape Aoki, we climbed to Nanako-toge pass and from there, through the valley of Niida, we reached temple 37, Iwamotoji, (where we also bought some wonderfully scented oranges) and then the Pacific again, where a shower catched us shortly before
Nakamura. After waiting around three quarters under a shelter together with an orchestra of frogs and a colourful train, we reached our lodging, a nice resort on the beach.
